A Flaw in the system

The Election was very close and it revealed a flaw in the system for selecting the President. The system did not let citizens vote directly for the President instead they voted for a representative in the Electoral College , then they would vote for the president. To get past the flaw they made each representative to vote for a president and also a vice president to avoid a tie between the two. The Federalist-controlled House of Representatives had to choose a president because each of them Jefferson and Burr had 73 votes.

The Election also led to the Twelfth Amendment in 1804, providing for separate ballots for the president and vice president.
